For heaven’s sake, Nancy, stop digging…
Having awoken a sleeping tiger, the hapless Nancy Pelosi is having trouble putting it back to bed, despite the many different lullabies she has crooned in the last week. She has gone from hard to believe, to an absolute pathological liar in the course of a week. And no exit strategy is apparent. She would have to admit that she either lied about the whole thing, or that she is now using the issue to attack those who waterboarded because the political winds have shifted. Or, just as bad, that she knew and condoned the activities, because it was what the times and situations called for. All this because that tactical genius Barry released the OLC memos to intimidate the lawyers who sanctioned waterboarding.Â
As I have written this self-inflicted injury will not be going away soon. In fact, it is getting worse, as Krauthammer writes,
The fact that Pelosi (and her intelligence aide) and then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Porter Goss and dozens of other members of Congress knew about the enhanced interrogation and said nothing, and did nothing to cut off the funding, tells us something very important.
Even the head of the CIA, Obama appointee Leon Panetta is casting aspersions in a much more forceful manner. No doubt as a result of blowback from his staff for not protecting them as well as he should. From The Hill, where he said,
“CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing ‘the enhanced techniques that had been employed,’” according to CIA records.
“We are an agency of high integrity, professionalism and dedication,” Panetta said in the memo. “Our task is to tell it like it is — even if that’s not what people always want to hear. Keep it up. Our national security depends on it.”
