Jimmy Nap re-inserts foot

As the former Governor of Arizona, you would expect the current secretary of DHS to be somewhat familiar with the laws regarding illegal immigration. As the former District Attorney for said state, you would hope she would be something of an authority on the subject. Sadly, Jimmy Napolitano is neither. Via Hot Air, we find she had this to say over the weekend on CNN,

What we have to do is target the real evil-doers in this business, the employers who consistently hire illegal labor, the human traffickers who are exploiting human misery.

And yes, when we find illegal workers, yes, appropriate action, some of which is criminal, most of that is civil, because crossing the border is not a crime per se. It is civil. But anyway, going after those as well.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The first illegal entry is classed as a misdemeanor, any subsequent entry becomes a felony. As we know that even she is not that dense, the only possible conclusion to draw is that she is, once again, sending the message to illegals that the door is wide open. She is effectively echoing this administrations plan which is to enforce as few immigration laws as possible, all the while sounding tough and performing showcase raids as window dressing, until such time as the economy improves and the case for amnesty might be better received. Which, of course, it won’t. However, at this time, even Democrats fear the voters’ wrath if they were to try to pull this stunt today.

It is also absolute madness to treat illegal day workers any different from drug smugglers or gun runners when it comes to border control. The idea that a man with a hoe slung jauntily across his back is merely seeking to till the land for an honest peso, and couldn’t possiblyhave any drugs secreted about his person is at best naive, and at worst, idiotic. This is also part of the continuing jihad against Sheriff Arpaio who, despite his faults, continues to be the only Law Enforcement Officer doing the job that Americans are not permitted to do.
