Noted legal genius, Whoopi Goldberg says it wasn’t ‘rape-rape”, whatever that means…

Hold your nose and watch as much of this as you can stomach,

As I mentioned before, she seems to be trying to make a distinction between statutory rape, and non- statutory rape.  She is attempting to re-write history by implying that Polanski was only charged because of his victim’s inability to legally consent, and therefore the act would have otherwise been consensual, but for that legal technicality.  Utter nonsense.  Let me reiterate.  He plied her with alcohol with which to wash down a Quaalude, then performed oral sex on her, penetrated her vaginally and finally penetrated her anally until he climaxed in her anus.  By any standard that is both “rape” and rape rape.”  There is no “allegedly”.  There is no “he was charged with…”   It is all a matter of public record that he pled guilty to a lesser charge due to his fame.  Read the victim’s testimony, from The Smoking Gun,

The girl testified that she left the Jacuzzi and entered a bedroom in Nicholson’s home, where Polanski sat down beside her and kissed the teen, despite her demands that he “keep away.” According to Gailey, Polanski then performed a sex act on her and later “started to have intercourse with me.” At one point, according to Gailey’s testimony, Polanski asked the 13-year-old if she was “on the pill,” and “When did you last have your period?” Polanski then asked her, Gailey recalled, “Would you want me to go in through your back?” before he “put his penis in my butt.” Asked why she did not more forcefully resist Polanski, the teenager told Deputy D.A. Roger Gunson, “Because I was afraid of him.”

How anybody can go to bat for this monster is beyond the pale.  The fact that he has evaded justice for over thirty years in no way justifies leniency.  He has lived a life of luxury and privilege in the South of France, all the while thumbing his nose at American authorities.  And Whoopi, he was not facing fifty years in the slammer.  Because of his position and celebrity he was allowed to plea to the lesser charge of unlawful sex with a minor, which carried a maximum sentence of five years.  Had he been charged with the drugging and sodomy aspects of this case, he would have been facing a well-deserved, in my opinion, fifty years in the pen.  But he didn’t.  After being placed on a 90 day diagnostic hold for evaluation, he was released after a scant 42 days.  The judge, rightly sensing public indignation at such leniency, reneged on that agreement and decided to put Polanski back in the hoosegow for the remaining 48 days.  Not 50 years, not even 50 days!  Even so, Polanski fled like the weasel that he is, and remains to this day.

Patterico brought up a good point yesterday.

Roman Polanski’s defenders continually emphasize one thing: that despite raping a child in Los Angeles, he has never done anything like that since.  I have a simple question: how do we know that?

To which, I responded in the comments,

Also, bear in mind his affair with Nastassja Kinski when she was just fifteen. As the Brits say, it shows he had form. Are we to believe those are the only two incidents with minors in his 76 years on the planet?
Hate to use this resource but from Wikipedia,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nastassja_Kinski

At 15 Kinski began a romantic relationship with director Roman Polanski…

What would you think?  Let’s take a look at a libel suit he bought against Vanity Fair magazine regarding an incident that they claimed, erroneously in time frame only, where he was picking up a young model at Elaine’s in Manhattan, via Mediaprof,

Polanski filed suit in 2002 in the United Kingdom against the American publishing giant Conde Nast over a 2001 Vanity Fair article.  Buried in the article was an account of Polanski propositioning a Scandinavian model at the New York restaurant Elaine’s on his way to the funeral of his wife following her 1969 murder by the Manson family.  Vanity Fair later conceded that the incident at Elaine’s did not occur at the time reported, but rather in the weeks shortly following the funeral.

Or this little tidbit, from the same source,

In this case, Polanski admitted to numerous trysts with everyone from movie starlets to school girls in Gstaad.

So, to re-cap.  Polanski is not a total bastard because he tried to pick up a Sharon Tate lookalike, after her funeral, as opposed to  just before, which therefore only makes him a heel?  Is that the subtle distinction we are looking for?  But he also seems to be establishing some sort of pattern of behavior here.  Given the power he wielded in Hollywood, is it crazy to think he had not develped a taste for underage girls?  Given his “talent” is it not possible that the powers that be were happy to turn a blind eye to Mr Polanski’s predilections?  After all, secrets are power, and Hollywood is a town that was founded on both, and they remain a powerful currency today.

Which brings me to an unexpected conclusion.  They say that rape is not about sex, at all, but it is all about power over the victim.  And once again, the elite of Hollywood, in a disgusting display of excess, close ranks to protect one of their most privileged members.  Disgraceful.

There is a handy list of Polanski supporting non-entities for your boycotting pleasure over at Big Hollywood.  Mind you, it’s tough to boycott someone if they don’t work…

The same site also provided the comment of the day, from Snoopdogg, regarding Polanski,

What if he ends up sharing a cell with Manson…..awkward!

Update:  Anne Applebaum doubles down on “stoopid” over at Patterico’s.  Some folks never learn.

I can’t believe that Whoopi Goldberg is supporting this wretched man! Investigation will probably show he is a lifelong offender, and it is time he encountered some consequences. Surely, Whoopi is not wanting to say that if a child is drugged and fearful when a man violates her, it is not rape! What is “rape-rape”? She needs some education, for sure.

    Whoopi – morally illiterate!

Polanski pled guilty, the girl said no, he plied her with drugs and alcohol compounding his dasterdly deed; if the woman was of age it was rape, that she was underaged further compounded his evil acts.

He became a fugitive from the law before his sentencing.

This is not about the victim, it is about justice in the name of law abiding people everywhere. Celebrity and money cannot be a reason a person is allowed to escape his crimes.

What would Whoopi be saying if this was one of her family members? Perhaps she ought to put the ganja down before expressing outrageously idiotic views in full view of the entire world.
