Crosby, Gates, Crowley and Bambi…we’re getting the band back together.
From Jake Tapper at ABC News we learn that Sgt Crowley will join Barry and fellow race-baiter Henry Gates for a beer at The White House on Thursday. A White House official tells ABC News that Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley will have beers with President Obama Thursday at 6 pm ET.
If you have been following my extensive, and incisive, commentary on this issue (all is revealed here) you will know that I do not think this will benefit the good officer in any way. Perpetual race-hustler and despiser of “whitey” Gates will not be able to exercise restraint after the event. He will allude to apologies not given, to future assurances not mentioned and to contrition not displayed by Crowley. He will spin it as his victory, because despite protestations to the country it is about him, and absolutely nothing to do with racism, except his own. Sgt Crowley, on the other hand, will be muzzled by the dual constraints of his professionalism and the relentless pressure from above from the black mayor of his town, from the black Governor, and from the current occupant of The White House (who is half black) all of whom have added fuel to this particular fire.
The funniest part to me will be the sight of the effette, latte swilling prof attempting to gag down a beer like a regular man of the people. A far cry from his usual pink Zinfandel or wine spritzer, I should think. Actually, the notion of settling this whole kerfuffle over a beer reeks of elitism, as if Barry and Skippy imagine this is how blue collar guys resolve their issues. Maybe I am wrong and they will all sit down and quaff 40 oz malt liquors?
To be fair, I am sure that Sgt Crowley will be bringing his whole family, I believe he has three children, with him and that is a wonderful opportunity. That is a memory that will last a lifetime for them all, it’s just that the circumstances that brought it about are unfortunate.
There is a small, as yet uncrushed, part of my psyche that hopes that Barry and Skippy will rise above it and show true deference to a man who truly is working to make the world a better and safer place in which to live, in very real terms, and at great personal risk. They could both learn a lesson from this man. There’s your teachable moment.
