Race disgrace!

Earlier today the internet was awash with the story of one Henry “Skip” Gates, a Harvard professor.  It seems he returned from a business trip late and was unable to gain entry to his home.  He broke into it with the assistance of his driver.  A neighbor, aware of the kerfuffle, alerted the police who came to investigate.  Depending on who you believe, Mr Gates either succumbed meekly to the officer’s every request whilst thrusting all sorts of ID at him, or he refused to initially provide anything whilst immediately playing the race card.  What?  Here in America, in the Barack Obama post racial environment?  Read the police report here.

It invoked a lively discussion over at Patterico, and I encourage you to read it.  Personally, I believe that playing of the race card was second nature for this professor.  He was not arrested for breaking and entering but for disorderly conduct stemming from his unruly behavior.  Did the police officer over-react?  Maybe.  His job, however, is to de-escalate the situation and if the prof was being antagonistic and screaming “racist,” it may be warranted.  In the end, the charges were dropped. Perhaps they had no merit, or perhaps it was politically motivated, who knows?

However, what disturbs me about this incident is a good news/bad news situation.  The AP reported on Barry’s latest TV campaign to force healthcare upon us, and in so doing debunked his many lies from tonight’s broadcast.  That was refreshing, and you can read it all here.  Pay particular attention to the last question, which I quote in full.

OBAMA: “I don’t know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home, and, number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there’s a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately.”

THE FACTS: The facts are in dispute between black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the white police sergeant who arrested him at his Cambridge, Mass., home when officers went there to investigate a reported break-in. But this much is clear: Gates wasn’t arrested for being in his own home, as Obama implies, but for allegedly being belligerent when the sergeant demanded his identification. The president did mention that the professor was charged with disorderly conduct. Charges were dropped

Barry admits he was not there and did not know all the facts.  Yet he does not hesitate to condemn the police for their actions.   He also took time to promote the canard that blacks and hispanics are targeted disproportionately, with no evidence whatsoever.  For a man who abused both hard and soft drugs who appears to have no criminal record, though we do not know for sure given his elusiveness, where does he pretend to have gained this urban expertise?  Worse than that, as those very words left his mouth, professional victim-class blacks and hispanics were nodding in agreement.  By disseminating such widely held untruths he has endangered every single law enforcement officer who has to perform a traffic stop on a minority in the future.

He is so unpresidential in so many ways, but tonight, in promoting this racial discord he has surely reached a new low.  Still, it’s early days yet.  Read more over at Hot Air.

There is an update at Patterico.  It is interesting to note how quick the race card was played.  I suspect all sorts of cell phone photos will begin to emerge.  The question will be, why was Dear Leader so quick to pass judgement without all the facts?  Sit down, it was a rhetorical question.  A smarter may may have declined to comment until he had more intel.

Here’s Michelle Malkin’s take.

….signing thousand page bills into law with out reading them and commenting on local police actions with out “knowing all the facts”, it is all same parcel, this man has no clue how to be a leader or govern.
